Edmond ‘Prophadd’ Shabangu is ready to take over the world.

By KB Kubatana
Edmond Shabangu, known on stage as PROPHADD, is a true embodiment of perseverance. Born in the small town of Sabie in 1989, PROPHADD has navigated the rocky path of the music industry with a steadfast commitment to his craft. Despite facing challenges, especially as an independent artist, he has refused to be deterred.
Growing up, music was more than just a passion for PROPHADD—it was a calling. “I always knew I loved music,” he reflects. “But I was truly hooked after listening to a song by one of my friends. From that moment, I felt an urge to write my own songs and never looked back.”
His influences are proudly rooted in South African music legends, with TKZee’s late member, Tokollo “Magesh” Shabalala, standing out as a key inspiration. “Magesh could merge hip-hop and kwaito effortlessly, and that’s what I strive to master,” he says, his voice filled with admiration for the iconic artist.
Despite his clear vision and unique style, the road has not been easy for PROPHADD. Coming from a small town, he has often struggled with a lack of support from both his family and community. “It’s tough when the people closest to you don’t believe in your craft,” he admits. “I had to prove myself, inviting them to gigs to show them that I’m serious about this.”
PROPHADD’s journey is marked by significant milestones, including his time with the group Blue Noise and being signed under Bush Voice Records. He also released a groundbreaking album, Focus, which fused hip-hop with rock elements, showcasing his versatility. But it’s his BackYard Music mixtape that he holds closest to his heart. “That project featured so many up-and-coming artists and beatmakers. It wasn’t just about me; it was about creating a platform for others.”
Looking ahead, fans have much to anticipate, with a new project titled Ngi’Busisiwe, featuring renowned artist AB Crazy, on the horizon. When asked about the message behind his music, PROPHADD explains, “I preach self-awareness. Knowing who you are and what you can offer is the key to success. Once you realise your potential, there’s no room for fear.”
But, like many independent artists in South Africa, PROPHADD has strong opinions about the industry. “If you’re not from a major city like Johannesburg, it’s tough to be recognised,” he says, speaking from experience. “There’s talent out there, but many up-and-coming artists give up too easily because the industry doesn’t always make room for us.”
PROPHADD is committed to changing that narrative. Through free studio sessions and open mic events, he’s creating opportunities for fellow artists to experience the magic of recording and live performances. “We need more platforms to support original South African music,” he insists, longing for the days when local sounds dominated the airwaves.
As he continues to grow his career, PROPHADD dreams of launching his own record label, aiming to provide the very opportunities he once lacked. “In five years, I want to be in a position where I can give hungry artists a chance,” he says. His legacy, he hopes, will be one of good music and positive change for the next generation of artists.
With a loyal fanbase behind him and an unshakable determination, PROPHADD is poised to take on the world. His journey is just beginning, and as he promises more music and visual appearances, there’s no doubt that the future is bright for this Mpumalanga-born rapper.
