In a world where the arts often seem to favour metropolitan artists, Sizwe Nkambule, known as The Kasie Writer, has defied the odds, taking the dusty streets of his small village, Driekoppies, into the heart of South African literature and beyond. With humble beginnings, the 34-year-old author has carved a path defined by perseverance, passion, and an unwavering belief in his talent.
Born on June 2, 1990, Nkambule grew up in a village overshadowed by big cities like Johannesburg. But instead of seeing his rural upbringing as a limitation, he saw it as a source of inspiration. “From my childhood, I was encouraged by Johannesburg City and Soweto Stars to love arts,” Nkambule recalls. “I grew up reading about celebrities who made it in Johannesburg, and that ignited a strong desire to represent Driekoppies, Nkomazi, Mbombela City, and Mpumalanga province to the world.”
Nkambule’s love for storytelling was shaped by South Africa’s finest talents. Icons like DJ Sbu, Mzambiya, Israel Matseke, and motivational speaker Vusi Thembekwayo played a crucial role in his development. Their relentless work ethic, combined with an ability to stay grounded in their roots, helped Nkambule build his own philosophy. “Hard work, dedication, and discipline are the pillars they taught me, and they continue to shape my journey,” he says.
But the road to recognition was not easy. Nkambule’s early attempts to publish his book, 1000 Universal Quotes Book, were met with frustration. Unemployed and struggling financially in Johannesburg, he had to navigate the city’s streets on foot, knocking on the doors of radio stations and businesses for support. Finally, a generous businessman saw the potential in his words and helped him publish the book, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Selling more than 100 copies of 1000 Universal Quotes Book without a formal book launch was a testament to Nkambule’s tenacity and the public’s belief in his craft. “It was such a great achievement,” he reflects. “As an unknown author, it was not easy to sell such a number of copies nationwide. But people believed in me.”
This humble writer from Driekoppies Village, Nkomazi, now works on an exciting new project—Ngibonga Imfundvo, a Siswati book in collaboration with literary legends Dr Mafika Lubisi and Mr J.J Ncongwane. His ability to adapt and explore new creative avenues has made him a versatile artist, not only penning novels but also venturing into TV dramas, music, entertainment articles, and life quotes.
Nkambule’s work isn’t just about personal success—it’s about uplifting others. His passion for giving back is palpable. “I use Facebook and TikTok to communicate with young people,” he shares. “I give them information about sports, arts, and education, encouraging them to stay far away from drugs and believe in their talents.” He embodies the spirit of mentorship, guiding the next generation through the same challenges he once faced.
As he looks to the future, Nkambule’s vision remains rooted in representing his home. “In five years, I see myself as someone who has fought hard to represent Driekoppies, Nkomazi, Mbombela City, and Mpumalanga Province to the world,” he says, filled with quiet determination. “I want to be an icon who encourages many young people to follow my journey of writing.”
Nkambule’s story is a testament to the power of dreams, even when nurtured in the most unlikely places. His rise from the dusty streets of Driekoppies to becoming The Kasie Writer is not just about fame or fortune—it’s about legacy. A legacy that shows young people from villages across South Africa that their stories, too, deserve a place on the world stage. Gazankulu.com
